Motorbike loops and long days out, with the road numbers and the honest timings.
Vietnam's only grape country is worth seeing: trellised rows in the driest corner of the country, with fruit that is sweetest in August and September. The wine sold in the gardens is a farm product made from table grapes, sweet and closer to a cordial; buy grapes, raisins and the green apple instead. Thai An is free to walk, 07:00 to 18:00.
A loop I ride in about three hours: out on duong 23 thang 10 to the Dien Khanh citadel at 10 km, north through the rice of Dien Dien to the foot of Am Chua, then east along the lanes beside the Cai river and back into the city over the Xom Bong bridge. Green fields in the winter-spring and summer-autumn crops, stubble and smoke between them.
Ninh Van is two places with one name. The resort bay has no road and no public landing; you reach it as a guest of Six Senses, An Lam or L'Alya. The fishing village of Ninh Van, on the same Hon Heo peninsula, has had a road since 2009, sits about 70 km from Nha Trang, and has homestays, seafood and beaches.
The working side of Cam Ranh bay is a morning on a motorbike: Ba Ngoi market before eight, when the boats have landed; the salt pans south of the town while the light is low; the lobster rafts seen from the road out to Binh Lap; and a lunch you price by the kilo before it is cooked. No boat, no island, and no camera pointed at the navy.
Dai Lanh is the last beach before the Ca pass, 80 km north of Nha Trang and 30 km from Tuy Hoa: white sand, a fishing village, a railway halt and a 20,000 VND shower ticket in 2025. Motorbikes ride the 12 km pass road, cars use the 4.1 km tunnel open since 2017. The Dai Lanh lighthouse is on Mui Dien, over the pass in another province.
The towers, the pottery village and the weaving village sit within about 12 km of central Phan Rang, so one motorbike day covers all three: Po Klong Garai when it opens at 07:30, Bau Truc late morning while the potters are working, My Nghiep after. The only ticket is at the towers, a travel-site figure of 20,000 VND in 2026.
In kilometres the coast road is no longer than the highway: about 60 km from Phan Rang to the Binh Lap peninsula against roughly 60 km on QL1. In hours it is a different day, with a pass, a bay, a coral shelf, a grape village and almost no fuel. Ride it between January and August and give it the whole day.
The bay has not changed: the boats still go out over the coral from the association office at published 2026 prices. What changed is everything around it: the province it belongs to, the rules for the islands next door, and how many people now know the coast road.
Go in August. Khanh Son's durian harvest runs from about July to the end of August and peaks in August, a month before the Central Highlands, on over 3,800 ha forecast to give 40,000 to 41,000 tonnes in 2026. It is 100 km from Nha Trang by the one road in, over a 600 m pass from Ba Ngoi in Cam Ranh, and I would stay the night.
Yes, ride it, but by day and in the dry months. The pass was shut for over a month after a rockfall killed six bus passengers on 16 November 2025, reopened to all vehicles from 13 February 2026 between 05:00 and 18:00, and in September 2026 the authorities still advised staying off it at night.
Mui Doi, at the tip of the Hon Gom sandbar in Dai Lanh commune, is the easternmost point of mainland Vietnam; Mui Dien across the water in the former Phu Yen is second. You reach it on foot from Dam Mon, 12 to 13 km each way over dunes, forest and boulders with a night at Bai Rang beach, or by hired boat in 30 to 45 minutes. January to June is the season.
Binh Lap is the legal answer to the Binh Ba question: a narrow peninsula on the south side of Cam Ranh bay, reached entirely by road, about 50 km from Cam Ranh airport by the May 2026 guides, with a string of small shallow bays, lobster rafts and homestays. It is not named in the June 2026 tour ban. Two days is the right length.
North first: Doc Let and the Hon Khoi salt, Dam Mon and Mui Doi, Dai Lanh and the old Ca pass road. Then west to the top of the Khanh Le pass, south over the Khanh Son pass to To Hap and Ta Gu, down to Cam Ranh bay and Binh Lap, along the Nui Chua coast road to Phan Rang, and 95 km of Highway 1 home. Not between October and December.
