I live here, which changes what I can tell you. Not which hotel has the better breakfast (the Nha Trang Guide does that properly), but which end of the beach I swim at, which mornings are worth an alarm, what the rain months are like when you cannot fly away from them, and what a month here costs from published figures rather than my receipts.
The city is louder and more built-up than the photographs suggest, and better than its reputation. Most of what is wrong with it is on one street.

The rain comes in October and November, the beach road is a barrier not a doorstep, the inland streets are where the city lives, and the province is far bigger than the beach. Twelve things I wish someone had told me in September 2024, each with a link to the post that covers it.
At five in the morning Nha Trang is the town its residents use: exercise groups in the sea by half past five, fishing boats landing under the Xom Bong bridge below the Po Nagar towers, Dam and Xom Moi markets trading from five, and the first coffee on the pavement. By nine it has handed itself back to the hotels. Set one alarm.
A cafe, a beach hour and a gym gave me a week here before I knew anyone, and the people came out of the routine. The foreign communities are large and mostly passing through: South Korea sent 616,000 visitors in the first quarter of 2026 and Russia nearly 620,000 in the first half, but nobody has published a count of the residents.
Coffee in Nha Trang is a morning habit before it is a drink: a phin filter on a plastic stool, before work, for 15,000 to 25,000 VND at a pavement stall in 2026. The chains and the garden cafes charge more and open later. This is how to order, what each tier costs, and the four cafes in my rotation.
I swim on the central city beach in front of a rescue tower, early in the morning, from February to August, and only under a green flag. I do not swim at the north end near Hon Chong, at the harbour end by Cau Da, or from November to January, when the winter swell runs and the rip currents form.
October and November are the wettest months of the year: roughly half the annual rain falls in those eight weeks and the typhoon window runs to about 10 December. Come if you want cheap rooms and a working city with the mud baths, the cafes and the citadel; do not come for the beach or the boats.
Rent a street or two inland from Tran Phu unless you need the sea from the window: on Numbeo's August 2026 index a one-bedroom is about 10.6 million VND a month in the centre and 7.2 million outside it. The western quarter is loud and convenient, the north past the bridge is local and cheaper, the south is newer, and Dien Khanh is the countryside option.
Vietnam recognises only 1968-convention International Driving Permits carried with the home licence, plus Korean permits under a 2023 agreement. Decree 168 has fined unlicensed riders of bikes over 125 cc 6 to 8 million VND since 1 January 2025, and 210 foreigners were fined here in six weeks of 2026. The rest is roundabouts, rain and two habits.
On Numbeo's August 2026 index a one-bedroom flat is about 7.2 million VND a month outside the centre and 10.6 million in it. Electricity follows the EVN ladder of 1,984 to 3,460 VND per kWh, a month of Viettel data is 150,000 VND, petrol is 24,230 VND a litre and a pavement coffee about 25,000. Every figure is published and dated; none is my receipt.
