Where I swim, where I do not, and which beach suits which month.
Hang Rai is a raised shelf of fossil coral on the DT702 coast road, run as the visitor site of Nui Chua National Park, and it is not for swimming. Go at first light on a falling tide for the water sheeting off the terraces, and between December and March for the green moss. I never found an official fee; travel sites quote 30,000 to 35,000 VND.
Dai Lanh is the last beach before the Ca pass, 80 km north of Nha Trang and 30 km from Tuy Hoa: white sand, a fishing village, a railway halt and a 20,000 VND shower ticket in 2025. Motorbikes ride the 12 km pass road, cars use the 4.1 km tunnel open since 2017. The Dai Lanh lighthouse is on Mui Dien, over the pass in another province.
Doc Let is the long, very shallow white-sand beach 46.3 km north of Nha Trang, about an hour by motorbike, and on a weekday in the dry months it is close to empty. The gated resort strip charged 50,000 VND an adult in 2025, chair and shower included; there is free sand outside it. At weekends the families arrive.
Between November and March Bai Dai is windy, mostly unswimmable and nearly empty, and it is the season I like it best. The beach is public and free from the gaps between the resorts, the tide covers the bathing areas for about half the year, and the kite riders rig at the windy northern end. This is the beach from the public access points, not from a resort.
I swim on the central city beach in front of a rescue tower, early in the morning, from February to August, and only under a green flag. I do not swim at the north end near Hon Chong, at the harbour end by Cau Da, or from November to January, when the winter swell runs and the rip currents form.
Dai Lanh is the best beach in the province and Doc Let the easiest good day out. Bai Dai and Binh Lap come next, Ninh Chu is the south's beach, and the Nha Trang city beach is good at dawn and poor by noon. Hang Rai is on the list only to say it is not for swimming.
