Staying past 90 days: how visa runs work from Nha Trang

As of 15 September 2026 the e-visa gives up to 90 days at USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple, applied for only at evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn, and a 45-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. A long stay is therefore a rhythm of exits: most people I know fly out of Cam Ranh and back, and the immigration division in Nha Trang handles the rest.

There is no 91st day on an e-visa, and there is no extension of a 45-day visa-free stay, so a long stay in Nha Trang is a rhythm of exits rather than a single permission. As of 15 September 2026 the e-visa gives up to 90 days, single entry at USD 25 or multiple entry at USD 50, applied for only at evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn; citizens of 24 countries get 45 days without a visa, and that stay cannot be extended. Most long-stayers I know, and I am one of them, fly out of Cam Ranh and back in.

What follows is the rules as published, each with its date and its official page, and then how the run works in practice from here. None of it is advice. My passport is not yours, the pages change, and the two official domains are where the current text lives.

What the e-visa allows, as of September 2026

The 90-day e-visa has been in force since 15 August 2023 under Law 23/2023/QH15 and is open to citizens of every country. It costs USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple entry, the fee is not refundable, and standard processing is quoted at 3 to 5 working days. Since 11 November 2024 applications have been processed only through evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn; the Immigration Department’s own site says so, and every other site offering the service is a paid agent.

On extending it, the secondary sources I found say an e-visa cannot be extended in the country and that the holder must leave or be sponsored for a new visa. I never managed to read the Immigration Department’s own FAQ page on that point, so I am reporting what the agents say and no more. Nothing I found says the 90 days start again when you re-enter on the same multiple-entry visa, either. No change to any of these rules turned up on any page fetched in 2026.

Who gets 45 days without a visa

Two lists, both with end dates, and two older sets of bilateral arrangements.

The second European group is for tourism, on any passport type. Two rules apply across the board: the passport must be valid for at least six months from entry, and the old requirement of a 30-day gap between two visa-free entries has been removed. A visa-exempt stay cannot be extended; the published options are to leave or to hold a visa. The Nha Trang Guide page on the Vietnam visa keeps the same lists for visitors.

What a visa run from Nha Trang looks like

The airport is Cam Ranh, 30 to 35 km south of the city depending on which source measures it, and 40 to 60 minutes by road. The Đất Mới route 18 bus runs to it from 10 Yersin Street beside the railway station, for a fare quoted at 75,000 VND in March 2026 and 50,000 on the airport’s own site. The Cam Ranh Guide page on the airport has the terminal details.

From there the international board is short-haul enough for a turnaround. Cam Ranh has about 25 international routes, weighted to South Korea, Russia and Central Asia, but the useful ones for a run are Bangkok on both of its airports, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, with Phnom Penh added in early 2026. Domestic flights to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi do not count; the point is an exit stamp. Coming back means a new e-visa, applied for before the trip on the official portal, or a fresh 45-day exemption for the 24 nationalities, with no waiting period between exempt entries. Land-border runs from the south exist and I have not done one, so I am not going to describe them.

The immigration office in Nha Trang

Visas, temporary residence cards and residence declarations for foreigners in the province are handled by the Immigration Management Division of the Khánh Hòa Provincial Police. Its own notice of 26 June 2025 gives the counter as 47 Lý Tự Trọng in what was Lộc Thọ ward, now Nha Trang ward; the provincial police public-service page lists the division at 80 Trần Phú with telephone 0694.401468 and email ca@khanhhoa.gov.vn, and lists 23 procedures including visa issuance and temporary residence card issuance and extension. I never found opening hours on an official page, and the two addresses may be the public counter and the headquarters; the Ly Tu Trong one is where I would go first. The ward name on any document you carry changed on 1 July 2025, which what changed in the 2025 merger explains.

The rhythm over a year

On e-visas, a year is four applications and four flights; on a 45-day exemption it is eight. Each exit is a day lost, a fare, and USD 25 or 50 for the next visa, which is why what a month here costs needs a line for it that the rent tables do not carry. The calendar is the real cost. The last permitted day goes on the fridge on day one, because I have no published figure for what an overstay costs and I would rather not learn it first-hand. Twelve things I wish I had known has this at number five.

Field note: the runs I have done were short ones, out on a morning flight and back two days later, and the wet-season version ends in a Cam Ranh downpour. The stamp took less time than the taxi queue.

What I’d do

This is what I do, not what you should.

  1. Apply for the next e-visa on evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn and nowhere else, at least a week before the flight, given the 3 to 5 working days quoted.
  2. Book the run out of Cam Ranh to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, the short international routes, and take the route 18 bus out and a taxi back.
  3. Check the passport has six months left from the day I will re-enter, not the day I leave.
  4. For anything longer than a tourist stay, I take the question to the immigration division at 47 Ly Tu Trong rather than to an agent.
  5. Write the last permitted day of the new visa on the fridge before unpacking.

Questions I get asked

Can a Vietnam e-visa be extended without leaving the country?

The secondary sources I found say no: the holder leaves or is sponsored for a new visa. I never managed to read the Immigration Department's own FAQ on the point, so that is what the agents say, not the official text. A visa-exempt stay cannot be extended either.

How much does the Vietnam e-visa cost in 2026?

USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple entry, non-refundable, for a stay of up to 90 days, with standard processing quoted at 3 to 5 working days. Apply only at evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn; every other site is a paid agent.

Which countries get 45 days in Vietnam without a visa?

Twenty-four: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland to 14 March 2028, and Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland to 14 August 2028.

Do I have to wait 30 days between visa-free entries to Vietnam?

No. The former requirement of a 30-day gap between two visa-exempt entries has been removed. The passport still has to be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

Where is the immigration office in Nha Trang?

The Immigration Management Division of the provincial police gives its counter as 47 Ly Tu Trong (former Loc Tho ward) in a notice of 26 June 2025; the police public-service page lists it at 80 Tran Phu, telephone 0694.401468. I never found official opening hours.

Where do people fly for a visa run from Nha Trang?

Out of Cam Ranh, 30 to 35 km south of the city, to the short international routes: Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, with Phnom Penh added in early 2026. A domestic flight does not count; the point is an exit stamp.

What a month in Nha Trang costs: rent, food, bike, bills

On Numbeo's August 2026 index a one-bedroom flat is about 7.2 million VND a month outside the centre and 10.6 million in it. Electricity follows the EVN ladder of 1,984 to 3,460 VND per kWh, a month of Viettel data is 150,000 VND, petrol is 24,230 VND a litre and a pavement coffee about 25,000. Every figure is published and dated; none is my receipt.

Renting or buying a motorbike for a long stay in Khanh Hoa

On the published 2026 rates a scooter costs about 2.5 million VND for 30 days at a Nha Trang shop, or about 625,000 a month on a long term, while a used Honda Wave lists from 8.5 million VND. Past a few months the sums favour buying, but no official page I found settles whether a foreigner can register one, and the licence comes first.
